The Lord Wolseley is officially the narrowest pub in NSW and
has got to be one of the smallest but what it is most famous for is its
beer. The pub has been around since 1881 and over the decades, the pipes
have been looked after with much tender, love and care.
This allows the Wolseley taps to pour the freshest Toohey’s or VB this side of
the Nullabor and keeps the bar busy seven days a week. The pub has sat
discreetly on the corner of Quarry St and Bulwara Rd since 1881 and to this day
it remains one of Ultimo’s best kept secrets.
Most of the regulars have frequented the Wolseley for most of their entire
adult life and are always willing to have a yarn with visitors about the
pub. For the price of a middy, the pub mascot Keithy will sit with you for
an hour or two and unravel a detailed history of the area.
He will tell you about the notorious Aussie criminal Neddy Smith who drank here
in the eighties and how one day he fired a couple of shots into the wall to
stop an argument. There is also the legend of Abo Henry savagely
attacking a police officer in the back alley many years ago.
You can ask about the origins of the massive propeller hanging on the far wall,
but that is the one thing none of the punters really seems to know about.
To this day, that propeller remains one of the few mysteries of the bar.
